Syzygium australe Big Red is a lush medium growing Lillypilly with large shiny fleshy leaves which have impressive strong crimson red young growth that turns green when mature. Produces white, fluffy flowers in abundance followed by pinkish-red edible berries.
Big Red is an ideal ornamental plant which responds very well to pruning. It has relatively short internode, is freely branching resulting in dense foliage form. Big Red may be pruned to shapes, as low, medium or tall hedge, managed to form standard topiary, or grown out as canopy trees with or without clear trunk with occasional pruning. Big Red is popular in landscaping where a strong statement or specimen is required. Takes full sun to part shade. Grows 3-5 m tall and is frost tolerant. The root system is suited to tight landscape positions and is considered non-invasive
The original plant was discovered at Crystal Waters Nursery in 2007 and after several years of propagation and observation was granted Plant Breeders Rights (PBR) under Commonwealth of Australian Plant Breeders Rights Act 1994. This robust form of Lillypilly of the Myrtaceae Family, Syzygium australe is native to Eastern Australia.
Big Red was initially released to selected Australian Nurseries and then to USA and Europe. It has proved to be a significant addition to the foliage plant range as it adds a red component and is a fast growing robust form of Lillypilly.
